How Much Iron Is Actually in Peanut Butter?
The iron content varies slightly between brands and types, but here are the typical values based on standard servings:

The Catch: It's "Non-Heme" Iron
The iron in peanut butter is non-heme iron, which comes from plant sources. Unlike the heme iron found in meat, poultry, and fish, non-heme iron is not as well absorbed by the body. This means even the modest amount listed on the nutrition label is not fully available to you.
Why Absorption Is Further Reduced: Phytates
Peanuts are legumes, and like many plant foods, they contain phytic acid (phytates). Phytates are compounds that bind to minerals like iron, zinc, and calcium in your digestive tract, significantly inhibiting their absorption. Some studies have shown that phytates can reduce non-heme iron absorption by 80–90%.
- Is it a good source of iron? No. The amount is low, and the absorption is poor.
- Can it help with anaemia? Not significantly. Rely on red meat, poultry, fish, fortified cereals, spinach, or legumes like lentils for better iron sources.
- Should I stop eating it? No. Peanut butter is still a healthy food — rich in protein, healthy fats, magnesium, and vitamin E. Just don't count on it for your iron needs.
This is also why diet alone is often not enough to correct an established iron deficiency.
