Can I Take Iron Tablets with Tea, Coffee, or Milk?
Back to FAQsQuick Answer
It is better not to take iron tablets with tea, coffee, or milk. Tea and coffee contain compounds that can reduce iron absorption, and milk contains calcium, which can interfere with iron uptake.
Full Answer
Many people take their morning tablets with tea or coffee. For iron supplements, this can be a problem.
Tea and coffee contain polyphenols and tannins that can bind to iron and reduce absorption. Milk and calcium-rich foods can also interfere with how much iron your body absorbs.
For better absorption, take iron with water or vitamin C instead.
A simple rule:
Take iron at least 1–2 hours away from tea, coffee, milk, calcium tablets, and antacids.
This matters especially for people who already have iron deficiency, low haemoglobin, low ferritin, fatigue, or hair fall due to iron deficiency.
Chelon already includes vitamin C along with ferrous bisglycinate, which helps support absorption and makes daily supplementation simpler.
